Hospital Sisters Health System, a $2.7B integrated delivery system and one of the Midwest’s leading community healthcare providers, is seeking a highly qualified and experienced professional as its next Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer.
As a key system-level executive at HSHS, the Chief Compliance Officer will hold a highly visible role providing strategic compliance planning expertise as well as oversight of the system’s compliance program in collaboration with the Chief Legal Officer and the HSHS Board of Directors Audit and Integrity Committee. This leader will bring a proactive approach to enterprise compliance, risk management, and training and education programs, functioning as an independent and objective review body that evaluates compliance issues and concerns across HSHS’s ministries in Illinois and Wisconsin. Key priorities include (1) conducting a comprehensive compliance program assessment to refresh the system’s compliance committee structure in line with leading practices, OIG workplans, and internal and external audit structures (i.e., transitioning from historically finance-driven processes to a compliance-driven model); (2) assessing current state team skills and developing the go-forward department structure; and (3) refreshing compliance-related education and training plans to hardwire colleague comprehension.
Position Summary
The Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer is responsible for strategic compliance planning as well as oversight of HSHS’s System compliance program and the audit program (internal and external) in collaboration with the HSHS SVP and Chief Legal Officer. Daily work is focused on a proactive approach to compliance training and education across HSHS. The VP, Chief Compliance Officer oversees HSHS’s System Compliance Program, functioning as an independent and objective body that reviews and evaluates compliance issues/concerns within the organization. This leader ensures the Board of Directors, management, and colleagues are in compliance with the rules and regulations of regulatory agencies; that System Compliance policies and procedures are being followed; and that behavior in the organization meets the System's Standards of Conduct.
Position Requirements
Education and Licensure
- JD degree preferred (with a valid, unrestricted law license and the ability to become licensed in Illinois) or master’s degree required.
- Certification in Healthcare Compliance or Healthcare Privacy and Compliance preferred upon hire.
Experience
- Minimum of ten years’ experience in healthcare compliance.
- Minimum of five years’ leadership experience, ideally at a director level or above.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Relationship builder.
- Demonstrated knowledge of compliance with OCR, Federal Sentencing Guidelines, healthcare laws and regulations, fiscal planning, budgeting, and reporting. Capable of revamping compliance program.
- Experience in overseeing the coordination, drafting and submission of responses to regulatory agencies, such as the OCR.
- Understands the delicate balance of guarding the organization from risk not refraining from becoming the department of “no”.
- Can gain respect of hospital and other affiliate CEOs and HSHS Executive Leadership Team.
