Opportunity

MedStar Health, a premier health system serving Maryland and the Washington DC region, is seeking a highly qualified and strategic finance professional as its next Chief Financial Officer of MedStar Washington Hospital Center and the MedStar Health Research Institute.


Washington Hospital Center, MedStar’s flagship $1.6B tertiary hospital and the largest in the nation’s capital, ranks among the nation’s top 100 hospitals with over 900 beds and a Level I trauma center. As a senior executive, the CFO will hold a highly visible role as a strategic partner to system leadership, the hospital President, COO, CNO, and corporate functions. Responsibilities include overseeing entity financial operations with a focus on strategic financial planning, budget management (operating and capital), new program analysis, ensuring financial reporting compliance, and guiding patient revenue activities. As the system redesigns and scales enterprise fiscal services, this leader will have the opportunity to shape financial reporting standardization, advise on growth initiatives, collaborate on front-end patient experience workflows, interface with District and governmental healthcare agencies, champion advancing tools and technologies, and leverage market data for innovation. A key near-term focus will be financial planning for a major campus capital renovation as it relates to demand, utilization, and new market entrants in the region. This financial officer will also oversee the fiscal functions for MedStar’s growing $63M clinical and scientific research division. 

Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer serves as the primary financial officer for MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) and the MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI). Major responsibilities include developing and maintaining a strategic financial plan and annual operating and capital budgets, financial analysis of new programs, review of all financial reporting and analyses, decision support, review of patient revenue activities, and oversight of financial and government reporting compliance. This leader is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of MedStar Washington Hospital Center and the MedStar Health Research Institute in accordance with industry-appropriate financial management techniques and practices, in partnership with MedStar's Professional Support Services Center (MPSSC).

Position Requirements

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree required (accounting or finance preferred) or MBA in lieu of Bachelor's degree. •CPA preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years progressive financial career track record in large tertiary or academic medical centers required.
  • Successful experience in a complex integrated healthcare system.
  • Demonstrated experience in a key leadership position.
  • Prior experience overseeing federal research grants and associate financial accounting.
