Opportunity

Lehigh Valley Health Network, a nationally ranked, premier health system, is seeking visionary and ambitious leader as its next President of Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) – Hazleton, an award-winning community hospital.


A compelling opportunity for an executive to step into a highly autonomous leadership role at this financially sound organization, the LVH-Hazleton President will have broad authority to direct both the greater strategy and core operations of the hospital with minimal oversight from the health system’s corporate leadership. 

Position Summary

Reporting to Terrence Purcell, President of LVHN’s Northwest Region, the President of Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton will be responsible for commanding and furthering the overall mission of hospital.


Specifically, the President of LVH-Hazleton will:

  • Provide visionary leadership to build and maintain an environment that attracts and retains employees committed to continuous quality improvement, innovation, creative problem solving, and the application of Lean principles to achieve cost efficiencies in services provided.
  • Lead growth initiatives to drive continued market share growth. Create business plans and cost-benefit studies for proposed new programs, equipment, and services.
  • Represent the hospital and broader organization to the local community, engaging with community leaders, the Chamber of Commerce, and other key constituencies.
  • Recruit and retain talented physicians and other clinicians to fulfill the needs and mission of the hospital and broader organization.
  • Communicate financial and operational results and other key metrics to stakeholders, including corporate leadership and the hospital’s Board of Directors.
  • Build an organizational culture focused on best practice and continuous improvement in patient safety, quality, experience, and efficiency. Develop and implement goals, objectives, plans, and processes to incorporate Lean thinking and efficiencies throughout their areas of responsibility. Monitor methodologies used to determine the cost-effective allocation of human resources, holding staff accountable to achieve established scorecard and budgetary parameters.
  • Lead colleague and patient experience initiatives creating/maintaining a positive and inclusive organizational culture and environment in which to receive care. Develop, support, and continually evaluate the professional climate to assure employee recruitment and retention, employee engagement, and promotion of a high-performance team.
  • Determine need for the purchase of major operational items and seek appropriate approval. Develop and secure approval of fiscal year operating and capital budgets. Monitor execution to ensure that the entity remains within fiscal parameters established.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies governing services provided by the organization. Implement and interpret operating policies, procedures, and programs established.

Position Requirements

Experience & Capabilities

  • 10 years in health services environment with demonstrated track record of success in progressively responsible assignments and leadership positions.
  • Demonstrates leadership that embodies the mission and values of the health system.
  • Adept at physician recruitment and engagement; has developed positive relationships and partnerships with physicians that have resulted in an aligned culture and improved outcomes.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive, constructive relationships with a local Board of Directors and corporate/regional leadership.
  • Possess a personal style that quickly engenders trust and credibility; is accessible, politically astute.
  • History as an involved and engaged civic leader in the local community.
  • A champion of the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion; a leader who has advanced DEI initiatives that have made positive impacts on an organizational culture.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills required; fluency in Spanish highly preferred.

Education

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Public Administration, Nursing Administration, or a closely related field of study.
