Opportunity

Foundation Health Partners seeks an accomplished and charismatic leader as its next Pharmacy Director in beautiful, family friendly Fairbanks, Alaska. This is an exceptional opportunity to join the most comprehensive health system serving Interior Alaska with oversight to plan, lead, direct, monitor, and evaluate the operations of Fairbanks Memorial Hospital’s 24/7 clinical pharmacy services to all patient care areas.


The hospital Pharmacy Director develops services that provide and enhance quality patient care, while promoting fiscal responsibility in resource utilization. As the leader over a longstanding stable staff pharmacist team which runs a high quality, cost effective hospital pharmacy program, key priorities are (1) guiding and elevating the department’s emerging managers; (2) being the face and voice of the pharmacy department to proactively build relationships with clinical operations and with finance; and (3) modernizing the pharmacy program with a fresh perspective on leading practice models to standardize workflows. The Director is responsive to unit needs with a focus on integrating core pharmacy operations with provider and nurse perspectives. This individual will collaborate to standardize medication use processes across all hospital-based clinical services.

Position Summary

  • Develops operational and capital budgets, manages operating expenses and key indicators within the budget.
  • Develops, implements, coordinates, monitors, evaluates and integrates pharmacy services that contribute to the overall success and financial viability of hospital-based pharmacy operations.
  • Uses creativity in the delivery of services and products in a highly competitive market.
  • Evaluates performance relative to need for improvement of processes to assure the safe and appropriate delivery of medications.
  • Plans, supports and leads quality improvement efforts for relevant pharmacy services.
  • Defines and resolves issues related to medication distribution systems and processes.
  • Manages staff resources by overseeing the recruiting, selecting, hiring and orienting qualified individuals. Evaluates staff performance in an accurate, consistent, objective and timely manner. Develops core position hiring strategies and ensures opportunities for professional development. Creates a cohesive pharmacy team committed to providing distributive, clinical and service quality to all customers.
  • Develops and monitors applicable policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory agency standards. Accurately and completely documents patient assessment data and clinical interventions.

Position Requirements

  • A degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy is required.
  • Advanced degree, Hospital Residency, or Master of Business Administration (MBA) and experience in non-acute pharmaceutical program management is preferred. Additional related education and/or experience is preferred.
  • Requires current pharmacy licensure in the state of practice, with pharmacy licensure in the state of Alaska within 90 days of hire date.
  • Licensure upon hire may be required based on business needs.
  • Requires a minimum of 10 years progressive experience in pharmaceutical operations, distribution, and/or contracting.
  • Must have experience in a hospital setting.
  • Must have at least three years of experience with staff management including staff pharmacists and techs.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of pharmaceutical accounting processes, cost/benefit analysis, online ordering, inventory control and automated dispensing systems, pharmaceutical distribution, state and federal laws and regulations regarding pharmaceuticals, drug pedigree tracking, pharmaceutical vendors, group purchasing organizations, managed care prescription plans, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and pharmaceutical distributors.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical services, formulary management, wholesaler relationships, 340B regulation, group purchasing operations and various contracting strategies to address different classes of trade needs.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills are essential. Must be proficient with software programs (Excel, Word, Access, Power Point and wholesaler online operations).
  • Cerner (Oracle Health) experience, while not required, is preferred.
  • Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Off-site travel may be required.

Compensation

An attractive compensation, benefits, and relocation package will be offered commensurate with the candidate’s experience. Candidates relocating to Alaska will be offered the chance to visit with their spouse/family during the interview process, and if offered the position, up to $20,000 reimbursement of relocation expenses and a temporary housing benefit.
